DNR plans prescribed burns in wildlife management areas

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources plans to conduct prescribed burns this spring in Greene, Guthrie and Dallas Counties on wildlife areas managed by the IDNR Saylorville wildlife unit in Panora.

Areas that are scheduled this season are Dunbar Slough, Bays Branch, McCord’s Pond, Springbrook, Sheeder Prairie, Beaver Lake, and Lakin Slough wildlife areas.

Prescribed burns will normally be conducted during the months of March, April and May. They are used to improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plant species, restore and maintain native plant communities and reduce wildfire potential.

Burns will be conducted on days that meet specific objectives and weather prescriptions as defined in each unit’s specific burn plan.

Persons who have any questions or concerns can contact DNR wildlife biologist Josh Gansen at 515-432-2545.
